In the aftermath of a car crash, Austin not only lost his mother but the ability to walk. Growing up in a world that fears people with supernatural abilities, he didn’t know what to think when a blast of strange energy healed his paralysis and gave him powers like a plenarie. Hunted by a relegator named Reuel and the United Alliance, Austin is saved by Maisie Orchid, a girl with the ability to teleport or “pocket-jump” in the blink of an eye.
With the help of Maisie and some new friends, Austin learns to control his new powers. He may look like a scrawny teenager with bad case of bed hair, but even Austin has come to understand that looks can be deceiving. Now this teen can harness raw electricity, move his body at super speed, and even duplicate the abilities of other plenaries. His vibrant, electric-blue eyes reflect the charged power he can pack in his punches.
Stumbling into a new and crazy chapter of his life, Austin must rely on his powers and newfound allies to discover the truth of his gifts, challenge the tyranny of the United Alliance, and defeat an old rival of the plenaries, the treacherous Solon Blak. Skeptic and a little awkward at times, Austin lacks the charisma of a typical hero but wears the heart of one on his sleeve. Standing for those who cannot stand for themselves, he will prove to the world that it is not the plenaries they should fear but those who let their own power corrupt them. Follow Austin’s journey as the story unfolds in the first part of the Echo of a Hero series.
For now, the world only knows her as a lone rebel called “The Orchid,” but one day Maisie will be remembered as an ally to Austin Bennet in his fight against the United Alliance. Headstrong and often overzealous, Maisie Orchid’s high disregard for the rules frequently gets her into trouble. To help Austin save a friend, she doesn’t ask for permission to sneak out and break into a highly secured relegator facility.
As a plenarie in her second incarnation, Maisie has years of experience in the body of a petite girl turning sixteen. She has a magnified metabolism, packing tons of food and energy into five feet of pure kick-ass. The plenarie has a quick-wit rivaled only by her swift teleporting skills, also known as pocket-jumping. With magical armor summoned by a pendant, Maisie is a menace to relegators and their superior Reuel, who is in league with Solon Blak.
Maisie is one of the few who live at the Sacrarium, a hidden sanctuary for surviving plenaries. She is particularly close with Aviana Blu, despite them agreeing on almost nothing. When Maisie isn’t fighting relegators or arguing with Aviana, she likes to spend her free time experimenting with plenarie tech or recreating iconic buildings out of LEGO bricks. Light-hearted in nature, few people realize that Maisie uses her carefree charm as a facade, concealing the truth about her dark past. A secret connection to Solon will not only threaten her friendships but her place at the Sacrarium as well. Learn more about Maisie Orchid in her official debut in Echo of a Hero: Spirits of Power.
An inventor, a blacksmith, a scientist, and a gifted dressmaker, Alton Malachite is a jack of all trades—and parts. Resurrected as an elemental shade, his spirit inhabits what remains of his armor for a body. Over the years, Alton has rebuilt himself on multiple occasions, with hardly any original pieces of his armor remaining. (Best not to ask why.) The founder and protector of the Sacrarium, Alton offers sanctuary to Austin Bennet and Kate Summers when they arrive on his doorstep.
Cunning and innovative, Alton had no trouble adjusting to a phantasmic state of being. His days as a plenarie with formidable powers may be behind him, but this ghost is no feeble soul. The plenarie’s rusted gauntlets hide collapsible swords and various other tools Alton can use in a fight, if needed. Ultimately, Alton’s true strength is his mind, with over a century’s worth of wisdom and knowledge gathered from all the lives he has lived.
The adoptive parent of Aviana Blu, Alton taught her everything he knows, from the mastery of sword combat to the vital elements of indoor gardening. His heart belongs to his daughter, but Alton is like a father-figure to all who live in the Sacrarium. Newcomers be warned, however, this ghost can be a danger to himself and to all from time to time. Alton is as eccentric as he is destructive; Austin quickly learns that most of Alton’s inventions tend to explode. Find out what Alton makes (and probably blows up) next in Echo of a Hero: Spirits of Power.
Descended from a family of warriors, Aviana Blu is the only plenarie at the Sacrarium who prefers a sword over powers. She is an exceptional swordswoman, raised by Alton Malachite and taught the skills to become a fighter worthy of her family’s legacy. Beauty is often deceptive, and this plenarie is no damsel in distress. No relegator stands a chance in a match when Aviana wields her sword, an ancient but powerful heirloom of her family.
With the aid of her pendant, Aviana can harness her powers and conjure magical armor. One of her abilities allows her to transform her body into pure energy. In this state, she can pass through walls or even fly a few feet off the ground. Aviana can also temporarily create constructs, shimmering duplicates of herself that make useful distractions in a fight. Her nasty temper gets the better of her more often than not, but at the end of the day, Aviana deeply cares for her friends and works hard to protect them.
If she isn’t too busy keeping Maisie out of trouble, Aviana spends her free time cooking, reading Charles Dickens, and working in the Sacrarium’s garden. Growing up, she struggled to embrace what made her different, but now the plenarie wears her vitiligo spots with pride and isn’t afraid to be the tallest person in the room. Months after some of Aviana’s friends mysteriously disappeared, she meets Austin Bennet. Skeptical of the new guy, she isn’t too shy to share her hostile feelings about him. The pair rub each other the wrong way right from the start, but there is more to Aviana’s grudge against Austin than meets the eye…
